Claude Connector
Actuarial Value Calculator
A connector that returns the actuarial value and metal tier of any health plan from its Summary of Benefits and Coverage or brochure — computed inside your Claude chat.
Overview
The Actuarial Value Calculator is a Claude connector. Hand it a plan’s Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) or brochure and it returns the plan’s actuarial value — the share of covered medical costs the plan pays for a standard population — along with a plain-language metal-tier read.
It computes from the plan’s in-network cost-sharing: deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, copays, and coinsurance. Actuarial value is a function of plan design, not network breadth, so in-network figures drive the result.
The engine is an independent implementation of the CMS Updated Revised Final 2026 Actuarial Value Calculator (September 2025 release), validated against the official workbook.

Connect
You connect the calculator once. After that it’s available in any chat.
- 1
Open custom connectors in Claude
Go to Settings → Connectors and choose “Add custom connector.” Custom connectors are available on Claude plans that support them.
- 2
Paste the connector URL
Enter the URL below as the connector’s server URL and confirm. Claude registers the four tools it exposes.
- 3
Sign in with Visuary
The first time you connect, Claude opens a one-time sign-in with your Visuary account to authorize the connector.
- 4
Allow the tools, then ask
When you connect, allow all four tools up front — quicker than approving them one at a time mid-conversation. Then attach or paste a plan document and ask for its actuarial value.

All four tools are read-only — they compute and report, and never change anything in your account or documents, so it’s safe to allow them all when you connect. If you don’t, Claude asks the first time each tool runs — choose “Allow always” and you won’t be asked again.
Tools
You don’t call these directly — Claude does, as your questions require. Here’s what each one is for.
calculate_avRead-onlyComputes the actuarial value and a soft metal-tier label from a plan’s in-network cost-sharing — deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, copays, and coinsurance.
apply_correctionsRead-onlyWhen the assistant is unsure about a field, you answer, and this re-checks the design before recomputing. Send a small correction, not a rebuilt plan.
extract_plan_designRead-onlyAn optional fallback that reads plan-document text into a structured design on our server, for when the assistant can’t read the document itself. Text is processed in memory and not stored; limited to a few documents per account per day.
display_plan_designRead-onlyReturns the plan design exactly as the calculator consumed it — every service category, with the methodology’s defaults filled in — so you can see precisely what went into the number.
Example prompts
Once connected, just ask in plain language.
- “What’s the actuarial value of this plan?” — with an SBC PDF attached.
- “Calculate the AV and metal tier for these three plans and compare them.”
- “What plan design did you actually use for that calculation?”

Important
Not the official CMS calculator. The AV Calculator is an independent implementation of the CMS Updated Revised Final 2026 methodology (September 2025 release). Visuary is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by CMS, HHS, or any government agency.
Estimates only. Results are for decision support, not certified actuarial values, and the metal-tier label is a rough guide, not an official designation. Determinations for regulatory purposes — including under 45 C.F.R. § 156.135 — must use the official CMS AV Calculator. Verify any output before relying on it.
The calculator processes plan documents in memory and does not store them; submit plan-level documents only (no member health data). Your use of the calculator is governed by the Actuarial Value Calculator terms and our Privacy Policy. Your conversation with Claude is governed by Anthropic’s terms; Visuary receives only the requests Claude sends to the connector, and is not responsible for how an assistant narrates or restates a result.
